controlled study

— A study with two or more treatment comparison groups

There are many types of controlled studies, including randomized studies (sometimes called randomized controlled trials), non-randomized trials, cohort studies, case-control studies, and controlled before-after studies.

Sometimes the term controlled study is used to refer only to studies where the researchers allocated participants to treatment comparison groups;, sometimes controlled study is used to refer only to studies where non-random allocation was used.
